Reed is a very passionate individual. I have known Reed for about 6 years now through his volunteer and outreach activities. He pours his heart and soul into everything he does (literally). I never have seen anyone work so hard as Reed does and the amount of time he devouts to teaching to others. I am certain our future looks great with people like Reed around.

When it came time for Reed to write this book, it was a nobrainer. Everyday, we all are involved with something that a civil engineer designed, but do we actually know what civil engineers do? This book is easy to comprehend for all ages and he grasped the broad profession of civil engineering very well. Civil engineers are not necessarily number crunchers as you may think we are. There is a lot more to this profession, such as keeping the public safe through hands on bridge and tunnel inspections (such as what Reed and I do) or attending public meetings to keep the local communities informed. Some civil engineers do like to stay in the office and plug in numbers or write reports and others like to go out in the field and get dirty or see structures get built.

Overall, I am very pleased that Reed found the time to write this amazing book. As a civil engineer myself, I still learned so much more about this profession by reading what other civil engineers do in this book. I strongly recommend this book!!!

Thank you Reed for all you do and keep up the great work!

From Sundaes to Space Stations eBook Reed Brockman Reviews

My children will love this book, I did. - They know they need science and math and now they know why! Mr. Brockman gave a human face to engineering. The interviews were very readable and he truly portrayed the field as the problem and puzzle solving activity that it is. What fun.
Reed Brockman has outdone himself with this enthusiastic survey of civil engineering careers, written exclusively for young people. His joy for his profession is infectious, allowing youth to focus on the adventure and social value of technical innovation and problem solving. Brockman is a master of describing engineering from intuition without intimidating a young reader with science and math theory. After reading, my teens were motivated to fulfill their dreams by accepting the challenge of technical curriculum.
Alright, so I'm reviewing my own book. Since I have 3 unrelated lives, picture this is the engineer me or the outreach coordinator me writing this, as opposed to the author me. I'm not going to try to say my book is either good or bad; instead I will simply assure you that it has my full heart and soul within it. I speak to schools several times per week as a volunteer activity outside my real work taking care of the bridges and tunnels around Boston. I want to think I speak for the whole engineering community when I say that I love what I do, love telling about what I do, and all too often find that most people do not even know that people exist that do work like mine. I work with bridges and tunnels, which in the public eye are the most recognized component of the civil engineering world. Designing landfills? Coastal protection structures? Drainage systems?

I couldn't find anywhere a book that just told what civil engineers did in simple terms. Structural engineers seem to have plenty of press, and there are plenty of technical books, but this book simply puts actual civil engineers in the spotlight, for what I believe may be the first time showing the field as an extremely broad one, and wrapping it all together by showing the common bonds and goals of these widely varied professionals.

My group, the Boston Society of Civil Engineers (the MA section of the American Society of Caivil Engineers), has been giving these books out to schools like crazy and both students and teachers alike are showering us with thanks. In addition, both engineers and non-engineers have been reading the book and I am thrilled with the great feedback I have been receiving.

So to conclude, I assure anyone that purchases this book, that they will find it enlightening and full of passion, much like all of the engineers who contributed to the contents within it's covers.
